Padding the Hair - Traditional



Hairstyles of the upper classes had become very elaborate and extreme due to the fashion conscious Queen Elizabeth. They padded, dyed, curled and ornamented their hair; and thank goodness they did, it looks amazing and set of trends in other ears too!

Blonde was the fashion at the time, and that continues today…though lots of multi colour hair is coming into fashion at the moment… as I talk I have pink hair! Anyway, Elizabeth had very loyal admirers and they wanted to achieve the flame red hair. Most of the hair dye at the time was very poisonous, and that the business for the wig makers got high as women where unsatisfied with their own hair and wanted more!

Even when you look at portraits of Elizabeth you ca see that she had a wig on and it was padded with 'rats'; pads made of hair which shaped the hair into heart shapes, half moon shapes, like the images you see below:
